“We created the AASR because we want to see more Australian music sung and more Australian composers performed.”
The Australian Art Song Resource (AASR) is the brainchild of mezzo-soprano Jenny Duck-Chong and soprano Nicole Thomson. Since 2021, we have been researching and developing this new comprehensive resource, to help connect teachers and performers with Australian Art Song and the composers who write them — with music created close to home.
“We hope the AASR will enable people to more easily access and discover some of the great Australian songs that exist and be a time-saving tool for teachers and students who want to find out more about songs created here in Australia.”
STAGE 1
For the first stage of the project, using data from surveys conducted in 2022 and 2024, we have documented the songs that are currently being taught in studios around the country and began developing the first searchable online database of Australian Art Song.
The Stage 1 databaese features:
- A list of teacher-tested Australian Art Songs
- Detailed pages for individual songs and composers
- Comprehensive data reflecting commonly sought selection criteria
- Links to available materials (scores, recordings, composer websites, etc.)
N.B. Basic song information and sources are included where known. Grading and classification are ongoing and will be expanded as research continues.

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND
Use the tool bar tabs and drop downs menus to find your way around.
The DATABASE tab contains the song list, search filters and a brief introduction. For more details about how it works click here. The drop down menu also contains some specific song lists for easy access.
The ABOUT tab is the general reference section - here you’ll find out more about the AASR and its founders, the creative team, the website design and acknowledgements.
The FLAMETREE tab features information on the trio and a growing collection of audio and video clips they are developing.
The NEWS tab is where you will find the background to each stage of the project and updates on the work.
Please take your time to explore and find the areas that are of most interest to you.
